Introduction
Foothill High School, a four-year secondary school, is one of two comprehensive high schools and one alternative high school in the Pleasanton Unified School District. Foothill opened in 1973 and currently has about 2,300 students. The campus is located at the base of the foothills that border the inner eastern San Francisco Bay Area. Pleasanton is a suburban community with an economic mix of families, and our student body reflects a diverse economic spectrum. In order to accommodate growing enrollment, the voters in the district passed two bond measures for school renovation that have given us more classrooms, athletic space and upgraded technology. While the town remains predominantly small and friendly in spirit, the actual population has grown larger as the result of the housing boom and proximity to Silicon Valley. With this influx, the demographics of the school have shifted, increasing the demand for more competitive academic programs to meet the needs of an upwardly mobile, newly affluent community.
Foothill's rich tradition of both care and accountability is a factor in helping each student reach his or her full potential. Recognized as 2001 California Distinguished School and a 2002 National Blue Ribbon California nominee, Foothill remains dedicated to school improvement. Scholastically, students excel, scoring above national, state and district averages on standardized tests (STAR), high school exit exams and the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Advanced Placement test results are high as well. At Foothill, each student is treated as an individual, held to high expectations and given challenging learning opportunities to meet his or her academic needs. Students may select from traditional academic course offerings, student support programs and a variety of honors and advanced placement offerings.
In an attempt to meet the needs of the whole child, the staff provides, in addition to our standards-based curriculum, numerous academic and service groups such as the Multicultural Club and a rigorous sports selection reflected in the excellence of the athletic programs. At the same time, character education is an integral part of our core mission. Integrity, honesty, responsibility, respect, compassion and self-discipline describe our community of character and are emphasized in every interaction with our educational partners. Parents play a vital role in student and school success. Our Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO), Foothill Athletic Boosters and Band Boosters provide leadership and support. Our school site council helps guide our school improvement process. With such support, we are able to provide our students with a wide range of curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular learning opportunities in which students excel. The educational community of Foothill remains dedicated to school improvement, focused on student achievement, reliant on partnerships and committed to communication. The mission of Foothill is to nurture and stimulate the intellectual, emotional and physical growth of each student. Expected schoolwide learning results emphasize four growth areas for all students:
- Become independent, lifelong learners
- Utilize essentials skills in current and future situations
- Strengthen personal character
- Practice active citizenship and concern for others.
